IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph Henry
Shaffer
August 24, 1953 – January 21, 2026
Joseph Henry Shaffer, born on August 24, 1953, in Mapletown, Pennsylvania, and a longtime resident of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, passed away on January 21, 2026, at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. He left this world surrounded by care, closing a life marked by resilience, dedication, and a deep appreciation for the things that brought him joy.
Born to Ruth Porter-Shaffer and William Shaffer, Joseph was one of fifteen children, growing up in a large, lively family that shaped his strength, determination, and deep sense of loyalty.
A proud United States Army veteran, Joseph served his country with honor and distinction, ultimately holding the role of Chief of Engineers. Decorated with the The National Defense Service Medal. His leadership, discipline, and commitment to service shaped not only his career but the values he carried throughout his life.
After completing his military service, Joseph continued his hardworking spirit in civilian life, retiring from Supervalu Transportation. He was known for his reliability, steady presence, and the respect he earned from those who worked alongside him.
Joseph embraced the open road on his motorcycle, the peaceful challenge of a good round of golf, and the simple happiness of dancing. He was also a black belt in Taekwondo, a testament to his discipline, focus, and determination. These passions reflected his free spirit and his ability to find joy in both adventure and everyday moments.
Strong-willed, outspoken, and deeply rooted in his beliefs, Joseph was a dedicated Republican who proudly expressed his full support for President Donald J. Trump. He was also fiercely competitive, bringing intensity and heart to everything he did — whether in sports, friendly challenges, or the goals he set for himself. His friends knew him as an amazing friend, honest, loyal, and always ready to stand up for what he believed in.
Above all, Joseph was a fighter — courageous, determined, and unwavering in the face of hardship. He spent the last five months of his life with his family by his side, meeting each day with the same quiet strength that defined him throughout his life.
He is survived by his daughter, Janelle Spring Shaffer, and his granddaughter, Korral Aliya Fazio, who brought him immense pride and love. Joseph was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
His legacy lives on in the stories shared, the laughter remembered, and the love he gave so generously.
No services will be held at this time. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia Research Foundation at leukemiarf.org in Joseph’s memory, to help continue the fight against this devastating disease. Donations may also be made to Hope for the Warriors at hopeforthewarriors.org to help support our veterans — a cause close to Joseph’s heart.
