Nathan L. Symes Jr. Born: November 10, 1962, in Riverhead, New York Passed: May 31, 2025, in Spring Hill, Florida
Nathan L. Symes Jr., also lovingly known as Dad, Pop, Nate, and by his fitting nickname, "Trouble," was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. A hardworking man with a deep love for his family, he dedicated his life to providing for his loved ones and serving his community.
Nathan started his career with Suffolk County, working his way up to become the foreman of heavy equipment operations for the Department of Public Works. His commitment was unwavering—spending long hours plowing roads during harsh snowstorms and ensuring the county ran smoothly. Earlier in life, he served as a paramedic and volunteered as a firefighter, bravely battling wildfires that swept through Hampton Bays and Westhampton. His dedication to public service was a testament to his strong character and compassion for others.
Nathan found joy in simple pleasures, including fishing—a pastime he enjoyed casually throughout his life. He once skipped school to spend a day fishing, only to end up catching himself, getting the hook lodged in his own head. It was in that moment that his nickname "Trouble" truly fit—a title he carried proudly as the family prankster, always finding a way to bring laughter and mischief into every situation. His love for adventure extended to his time in the Boy Scouts, where he achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. Later in life, when his grandson, Terrance, joined the Boy Scouts, Nathan became actively involved, attending meetings, events, and camping trips to support him.
He also loved watching NASCAR races every Sunday while his beloved wife, Pat, prepared his favorite snacks in the kitchen. Football was another cherished pastime, especially watching games with his son-in-law, Tywane. Hunting in his younger years brought him excitement, spending days in the woods with friends, always eager to share the adventures of his trips—whether he caught a deer.
Most of all, Nathan cherished his family. He treasured moments spent with his grandchildren—hosting barbecues, swimming, and laughing together. A natural jokester, he brought joy to those around him, always teasing and making people smile, whether it was his nieces, nephews, siblings, grandchildren, or anyone lucky enough to be in his presence. His grandchildren knew him as the playful, mischievous "Trouble," a nickname that perfectly captured his fun-loving spirit. As a devoted brother, Nathan shared an unbreakable bond with his five siblings, always making time to call, joke, and stay connected, no matter the distance.
Nathan was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 33 years, Pat Symes, his son, Rich, and his grandson, Kobe. He is survived by his children: Michelle and her husband Tywane, Joey, Kevin, and Tiffany, as well as his grandchildren: Terrance, Devin, Kya, and Kaylee. He also leaves behind his five beloved siblings: June (and her late husband Robert Hudnall), Debra (and her late husband Paul Hladky), Charlotte (and her husband Blair Lorimer), Origen (and his wife Lenneke Symes), and Cheryl (and her husband Howard Treadwell). His legacy continues through his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom he cherished deeply.
Nathan Symes was a hardworking, family-oriented man with a heart of gold. He would give the shirt off his back for anyone, always putting others before himself. His humor, warmth, and love will forever be remembered. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten—always remaining in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
